Designed for a family of five on a long, narrow, sloping suburban site, this contemporary home presents simple, layered forms to the road, however it is not until one enters that this home’s true spatial appeal can be appreciated.

Intersecting roof lines and varying floor levels inter-relate to express the different spaces which flow into each other while still feeling separate and independent. The central family level contains the kitchen, dining areas and living pavilion. A few steps down lead to the separate lounge with views to the street and wider neighbourhood, while steps up lead to the bedroom wing where the three children’s rooms are positioned along a glazed corridor overlooking the pool courtyard. At the rear a feature timber and steel stair provides access to the master suite above.

The lightness of timber, glass and plasterboard provide a counterpoint to the heavy rough-cast concrete blade walls which slice through the plan providing stop-ends to the carefully positioned pavilions which extend from the main rectangular form.  Outdoor courtyards sit in the lee of these pavilions providing versatile indoor-outdoor flow, which can be easily configured to suit Auckland’s changeable weather.
