About This Project

Jonathan’s own home was designed to make the most of the north facing aspect of one of the few remaining, undeveloped sites in the Auckland suburb of Mt Eden.

The design response to this core idea is the formation of a black cedar barrier wall which slices centrally across the site, through which only the garage and stairwell forms project. The only other penetrations in this façade are the entry door recess and first floor slot windows.

The living, dining and kitchen areas focus to the north-facing courtyard and adjacent pool. Wide sliding doors pull back to create an easy flow between in and out. Similarly, the studio space is connected to the east lawn with a triple slider providing a light and open work space.

Passive solar design, generous insulation and double glazing provide a warm, comfortable home. Rain-water is collected for re-use and water heating is by way of air-to-water heat-pump.

This home represents a simple yet well resolved solution to the site and brief, in terms of both plan and aesthetic, while delivering a truly special family home.
